Bangladesh cricket team were handed a new worry on Saturday as pacer Shoriful Islam injured his left hand during their T20 World Cup warm-up game against India, making him doubtful for their tournament opener.
This extends Bangladesh’s injury list as Taskin Ahmed is also recovering from a rib injury.
Shoriful injured his bowling hand in penultimate delivery of the India innings as he tried to stop a drive from Hardik Pandya.
It was later revealed that he split the webbing between his index and middle fingers and had to get six stitches.
‘He’s got six stitches,’ Bangladesh Cricket Board physician Debashish Chowdhury said in a video message on Sunday.
‘Considering his importance, we are trying to give our best so that he can come back quickly.’
This injury now leaves Shoriful racing against time to get fit as Bangladesh will play their first game of the World Cup on June 8 against Sri Lanka in Dallas.
Bangladesh are also still unsure of Taskin being fit in time as the pacer is rehabilitating from a rib injury he suffered during Bangladesh’s five-match home series against Zimbabwe.
According to reports, the pacer’s recovery is going well, and he was supposed to start bowling soon, but he is yet to be cleared to bowl in full flow, with him just starting to practice without a run-up.
If both of them are unfit for their tournament opener, then it will be a major concern for the Tigers, as they have only two more pacers in the squad – Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
Bangladesh would preferably play with three pacers against Sri Lanka, but that now seems in danger due to the injuries, and they cannot call upon Hasan Mahmud yet, as if he is to be brought in from the reserves, they will have to discard either of the injured pacers for the remainder of the tournament.
