A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight between members of Border Guard Bangladesh and drug peddlers along the bordering area at Naikhyangchari upazila in Bandarban early Monday.

The deceased is Nizam, an alleged drug trader of Khurushkul union of Cox’s Bazar.


Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of the Naikhyangchari police station, said that a patrol team of the BGB challenged a group of drug peddlers led by Nizam at about 5:00am.

The drug peddlers also set fire to the motorbike of the BGB. At one stage, the drug peddlers opened fire on BGB, prompting them to fire back, triggering a gunfight at Morichaya of the bordering area, leaving one dead.

According to the BGB, acting on secret information, the BGB members in a drive seized 98 cartoons of Burmese cigarettes and 20,000 Yaba pills.

However, the BGB said that a man was injured during the gunfight.
