The Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch chief, Harun-or-Rashid, said on Tuesday that Nepal would decide whether they would hand over Siam Hossain, a suspect in the ruling Awami League lawmaker for Jhenaidah-4 Anwarul Azim Anar murder case, to India or Bangladesh.
‘Siam is also the most wanted in India as the murder took place in the country’s West Bengal….If Nepal hands over Siam to India considering the place of occurrence, it will not make any impact on our investigation,’ Harun told reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after returning from Nepal.Â
He said that Siam was a close associate of Bangladesh-born United States citizen Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the mastermind behind Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar killing, reportedly taken place in India’s West Bengal.
A four-member team of Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday left Dhaka for Nepal to investigate the murder of Anwarul Azim.
Harun claimed that Nepal authorities unofficially told them about detaining Siam while a Dhaka court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against Siam Hossain.
‘Two cases were filed over lawmaker Anar murder in two countries– a murder case in India, and an abduction case in Bangladesh,’ he added.
He said that there was no extradition treaty between Bangladesh and Nepal but Nepal had the treaty with India.
‘We have discussed the matter with officials of several agencies in Nepal during the visit. We have not only discussed the lawmaker murder case but also discussed those criminals staying in or using Kathmundu as routes after perpetrating crimes in Bangladesh,’ he added.
He said that many criminals also went to Kathmundu through India as well.
Harun said that they would also discuss extradition of US citizen Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen with the United States Embassy in Bangladesh.
A Dhaka court on Friday placed three suspects– Syed Amanullah Aman alias Shimul Bhuiyan, his associate Tanvir Bhuiyan, and Celesty Rahman– on five-day fresh remand in police custody in the case filed over the murder of Anwarul Azim.
A Dhaka Court, meanwhile, on Tuesday recorded the confessional statement of Tanvir Bhuiyan during the ongoing five-day remand period over lawmaker Anwarul Azim murder and sent him to jail again.
Tanvir Bhuiyan gave the confessional statement a day after Celesty Rahman, one of the three suspects arrested in Bangladesh.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Tofazzal Hossain recorded his statement under 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure following a petition by the DB assistant commissioner of police, Mahfuzur Rahman.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station general recording officer sub-inspector Jalal Uddin confirmed it to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
He said that two out of the three remanded had given their confessional statements in the case.
Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar went to India for medical treatment on May 11 and remained missing since May 14.
