The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday started the scrutiny of a fresh allegation against former Army chief General Aziz Ahmed over his accumulation of illegal wealth in different parts of the country.
The commission took the move following a newspaper report that exposed the former army chief’s wealth, an ACC official confirmed, adding that the newspaper report was sent to the scrutiny cell for necessary steps.
ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that since scrutiny against Aziz was underway, as per the commission’s practice, the newspaper report would now be tagged with the previous allegation.
‘There is no need to initiate any separate inquiry into the latest allegation as the person is already under the scanner of the commission,’ he said.
A Bangla daily published a report on Wednesday mentioning that Aziz and his family members had amassed huge wealth, including a number of multi-storey buildings, flats, plots, and lands.
Contacted, former army chief Aziz told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday that most of the information mentioned in the report regarding his properties is ‘false and connected.’
‘I have spoken to my lawyer. Whatever protests are needed, we are making them. We will give a rejoinder,' he said.Â
According to the report, Aziz owns a total of 185.6 katha of land in three separate plots at Silicon City Housing under Boro Bardeshi Mouza in Aminbazar, Dhaka. He also has a bungalow house on that land.
The report said that the property was gifted to Aziz and his family for helping Silicon City Housing’s managing director, Sarwar Khaled, grab land for the housing when Aziz was the army chief.
Aziz also has 21 bigha plots of land, purchased in 2018, in the Purnimarchala area of Yarpur Union in Ashulia, where a bungalow was built, according to the report.
On the other side of the Zaker dairy farm in Mohammadpur, Aziz owns two plots of four katha each worth Tk 6 crore.
Aziz and his brothers took several flats from Unique Holdings through establishing influence at House No 99 on Quba Masjid Lean at Mohammadia Housing Limited, the report said.
Several plots were also found in the name of Aziz in the Baherchar area of Bhakurta union, where he has a plot of 80 decimal land on the right side of Zamzam Housing Road behind Shyamlasi Kalatia Para and another 50 decimal plot a little away.
He also owns a 17-decimal plot next to 'Active Pre-cadet School' in the Shyamlasi Dudu Market area.
Asif Ahmed, son of Aziz’s elder brother Anis Ahmed, has been accused of grabbing 78 decimal lands with the help of Aziz in the Baherchar and Looterchar areas of the Bhakurta union.
There are also 98 decimal lands of Aziz at Shyamalapur Mauza, and the land used to belong to Luterchar Bora Masjid and Bachila Masjid, while Aziz’s sister-in-law Nurul Islam owns 39 decimal lands on the adjacent plot.
Asif has 52 decimal lands in Charwashpur, and Aziz has a single-storey building on 5 khata land next to Shyamlasi school. However, locals said he had given the house to his sister.
Aziz has a 10-storey building on a 5-katha plot on Bangabandhu College Road, next to Ceramic Gate No 4 at Pallabi in Mirpur-12. The house No. 13/14 at Block D and Avenue 2 has 21 flats.
After the construction of the house in 2018, Aziz took control of it from the housing company.
The media report also claimed that a house of Aziz was also found in Mirpur DOHS on Road No. 13 in Mirpur.
He has a luxurious house on Road No. 6 of Nikunj-1, next to Kurmitola Golf Club. House No. RCF9+F5P is named ‘Aziz Residence’.
Earlier on May 30, the ACC, at a meeting of the commission, discussed the graft allegation against Aziz and ordered its scrutiny cell to scrutinise corruption allegations against him.
In a petition to the ACC, Supreme Court lawyer Salah Uddin Reagan sought an inquiry into former army chief Aziz's corruption.
On May 21, the United States Department of State announced that the former chief of the Bangladesh Army, General Aziz Ahmed, and his family members are generally ineligible to enter the US due to his involvement in ‘significant corruption’.
Aziz was Bangladesh’s army chief between 2018 and 2021.
