An activist of Juba League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League, was gunned down by miscreants in Bahadurpur Tetultala intersection under Sadar upazila in Jashore early Friday.

However, the victim鈥檚 family claimed the conflict centring the just-held Upazila Parishad election led to the killing.

The deceased is Mohammad Ali, son of Abdur Rahman of Bahadurpur area under the Sadar upazila and a fellow of the ward No-9 councillor Hajji Suman, also a Juba League leader.

Locals said that the victim was a campaigner of upazila chairman candidate Towhid Chaklader Fontu who won in the election held on Wednesday.

They said that Mohammad Ali was returning home alone around 12:30am after attending a fest organised by the winning candidate Fontu.

A group of four to five men intercepted his way in the Bahadurpur Tetultala intersection and fired in his head and fled the scene, according to them.

Later, he was rushed to Jashore General Hospital where physicians declared him dead, said Dr Md Sujayet, a physician of the emergency department of the hospital.

He informed that the victim sustained two rounds of bullet in head and one in a leg.

Abdur Razzak, inspector (investigation) of Kotwali police station, said that one more police team was working to nab the assailants involved in the murder.

The motive behind the killing could not be determined right now, he said.
