
Politicians and professionals on Friday at a commemoration meeting said that the ideals of political thinker Serajul Alam Khan would have to be followed to establish an exploitation-free democratic Bangladesh.
They said that Serajul Alam Khan wanted to establish rights of the ordinary people.
But his dream has not been fulfilled so far, they said.
They called on youths to come forward for establishing his ideals and form an exploitation-free democratic country.
Serajul Alam Khan Foundation and Research Institute organised a discussion at the National Press Club titled ‘Liberation war and Serajul Alam Khan’ to observe the first death anniversary Serajul Alam Khan,  where convener of the foundation journalist Abu Sayeed Khan chaired.
Political thinker and former general secretary and founder of ‘Nucleus’ Serajul Alam Khan died on June 9 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital suffering from old age complications. He was 82. Â
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod president Hasanul Haq Inu said that Serajul Alam Khan played important roles in preparing ground for the War of Independence of 1971.
Moreover, he also played a role in organising the mass movement of 1969, Inu said.
No one could erase Serajul Alam Khan’s name from the history of Bangladesh, Inu added.
Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president Sharif Nurul Ambia said that the country was passing a critical time when democratic rights of the people were grabbed by the Awami League government.
Serajul Alam Khan did not want to establish such a Bangladesh where people could not enjoy their rights, Ambia said.
He called on the youths to come forward for establishing a democratic country where people would enjoy their rights, including voting rights.
The present government is trying to erase the name of Serajul Alam Khan from the history of the War of Independence, Ambia said.
Khalequzzaman, an adviser to the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, said that his party was trying to establish a democratic and oppression-free country where people would enjoy their democratic rights.
Eminent economist Mahbub Ullah said that Serajul Alam Khan was one of maker of the history of Bangladesh and his name could not be erased easily.
He called on political parties to work for fulfilling the dream of Serajul Alam Khan by establishing a democratic country.
Journalist Shamsuddin Peara read out the keynote paper at the discussion where he said that as a student leader Serajul Alam Khan played such a role before the War of Independence that it helped Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to be a mass leader to lead the war in 1971.Â
Eminent lawyer ZI Khan Panna called on all to work for establishing ideals of Serajul Akam Khan to establish a democratic country.  Â
Sujan general secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said that now the country was deviated from democratic rule.
He called on all to be united to restore democratic rule in the country.
Gono Forum faction general secretary Subrata Chowdhury said that Serajul Alam Khan did not want to establish such a country where voting rights of the people would be seized.
Jatiya Samjtantrik Dal-JSD vice-president MA Awal and others also spoke at the programme. Foundation member secretary and niece of Serajul Alam Knan lawyer Farah Khan conducted the programme.
