The BBA programme office of the School of Business and Economics of United International University organised a post-budget discussion programme at the university at United City, Madani Avenue in Dhaka on Saturday, said a press release.

Independent lawmaker for Faridpur-3 constituency and Ha-Meem Group chairman, CEO and managing director AK Azad was present as chief guest at the programme.

Centre for Policy Dialogue fellow Professor Mustafizur Rahman was present as keynote speaker at the event, which was presided over by UIU vice-chancellor Professor Md Abul Kashem Mia.

AK Azad said that the development sector budget was important to make the country’s economy stronger. But the allocation for the development sector was low in the proposed budget.

Professor Mustafizur Rahman said, ‘The size of our budget is much smaller compared to other countries of the world. This year’s budget has been prepared without matching with real work. In our country, payments start before the completion of the highest projects. Therefore, a major part of the revenue has to be used for repayment of debt finance.’

Professor Md Abul Kashem Mia said, ‘Currently, the middle-class people in the country are spending their days in great difficulty.’

Research and Policy Integration for Development chairman Mohammad Abdur Razzak, former finance secretary Mahbub Ahmed and UIU economics department head Professor Mohammad Omar Farooq were present as discussants at the programme.

The UIU BBA programme director, Professor Salma Karim, delivered the welcome address and the UIU School of Business and Economics dean, Professor Mohammad Musa, delivered the vote of thanks.

Besides, heads of different departments, faculty members, officials of the university and other distinguished guests were present at the programme.
