Badal Rahman

Today is the 14th anniversary of the death of freedom fighter, filmmaker, film activist and writer Badal Rahman, who made an immense contribution to the country’s film scene.

Born on June 4, 1949 in Karachi, Pakistan, Badal Rahman served as the president of the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh until his death in 2010.


He completed a diploma in film editing from the National Film and Television Institute of India, popularly known as Pune Film Institute.

A politically conscious filmmaker, he believed that films could play an important role in shaping people’s thoughts, feeling and behaviours.

Badal Rahman made his directorial debut in 1974 with the film titled Protyasar Surya, which he jointly directed with Syed Salahuddin Zaki.

He also directed the first feature film for children in Bangladesh titled Emiler Goyenda Bahini.

His directed films include ‘Chhana O Muktijuddha’ and ‘Kathal Burir Bagan’.

Badal Rahman passed away on June 11, 2010.
