The Workers Party of Bangladesh, a partner in the Awami League-led alliance, will hold nationwide demonstrations on June 25, protesting against government’s failures, including price hikes of essential commodities, mass corruption, money laundering, and mismanagement in the banking sector.
The party announced the programme at a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday.
Leaders of the party also placed a five-point demand – controlling the price hikes of essential commodities and introducing full rationing, curbing mass corruption and forming a ‘special commission’ to identify and punish the corrupt, forming a ‘banking commission’ to control mismanagement in the banking sector, taking steps to return siphoned money to the country and forming a ‘special tribunal’ for the trials of loan defaulters.
General secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha, who read out the written speech at the press conference, said that the party would mobilise movements to implement these demands.
Referring to the proposed budget for the financial year 2024-25, placed in the parliament on June 6, Badsha criticised it for lacking measures to address the country’s worsening economic situation.
The press conference was chaired by party president Rashed Khan Menon, with central leaders Tapon Roy Chowdhury, Abdul Hossain, Amirul Haque Amin, Mostafa Alamgir Ratan, and others in attendance.
