The High Court on Wednesday set June 30 for starting hearing of the rule it issued earlier questioning the legality of awarding a contract to a private company with Tk 1,000 as monthly rent to operate 7,580 square feet staff canteen at Uttara Depot of MRT Line-6.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon also set June 30 for passing order over a complaint filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Tanvir Ahmed with the court.

Tanvir alleged that he was subjected to humiliation by the Roads and Highways Department joint secretary Naznin Wares when he appeared before the committee on May 14 responding to a notice issued by the joint secretary.

Tanvir filed a writ petition challenging the legality of renting out the Metro Rail Staff Canteen at a cheap rate.聽聽聽

The court set the schedule for further hearing on June 30 after accepting a probe report submitted by the Roads and Highways Department to the court, stating that there was no mistake in awarding the contract to operate the staff canteen.

The report justified the contract at a cheap rate, stating that no outsider would be allowed to enter the canteen, which has been reserved for its 250 staff.聽

It said that six companies brought schedules for the contract.

Four of the companies did not respond while one did not submit the tender, the report added.

It said that Khandaker Enterprise was later given the task to operate the canteen after bargaining with it and giving many conditions.聽聽
