The ruling Awami League’s Jhenaidah district unit general secretary Saidul Karim Mintu has been shown arrested and was remanded in police custody in a case filed in connection with AL lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar murder in India’s West Bengal a month ago.
Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Tofazzal Hossain granted eight-day remand for Saidul Karim after hearing the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch’s 10-day remand prayer on Thursday.
DB on Tuesday detained Mintu from the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
DMP DB chief Harun Or Rashid, while talking to reporters at his office, said, ‘We do not detain anyone without having specific information and proof.’
He said that Saidul was found involved in the murder according to the confessional statement of Shimul Bhuiyan, arrested in Bangladesh as one of the key suspects.
Mintu had talked to the United States citizen Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, alleged mastermind of the killing, on May 6 on WhatsApp and also spoke about the overall financial transactions for implementing the murder of Anwarul Azim Anar, according to Harun.
Harun said that AL Jhenaidah district unit relief and social welfare secretary Qazi Kamal Ahmed Babu was a close associate of Mintu.Â
He said that Mintu had taken three-phones of Qazi Kamal Ahmed Babu.
‘Mintu suggested Babu filing a general diary over losing his three mobile phones. The question is why Mintu had done this. Babu is a relative of Shaheen and a close associate of Mintu,’ Harun said.
He said that there might be some connection of political ambition as Mintu also had submitted nomination paper for Jhenaidah-4 constituency.Â
‘We had taken him to custody for detail interrogation and to find out who else are involved in the heinous murder,’ he added.
On June 6, the DMP DB detained AL Jhenaidah district leader Qazi Kamal Babu from Jhenaidah sadar upazila in connection with the case.
He was later taken to Dhaka for interrogation as local people and the police said that Babu had close links with Shimul Bhuiyan.
Three suspects — Syed Amanullah Aman alias Shimul Bhuiyan, his associate Tanvir Bhuiyan, and Celesty Rahman were sent to jail after two phases of remand.
Celesty Rahman gave confessional statement on June 3 and Tanvir Bhuiyan on June 4.
All of the three arrested are now in jail.
Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar went to India for medical treatment on May 11 and went missing on May 14.
On May 22, Kolkata detectives confirmed that he was murdered.
Siam Hossain, who was brought back to India from Nepal, is now in the custody of the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department.
The CID West Bengal recovered the bones from a spot on the bank of a canal near Polerhat in North 24 Parganas around 15 kilometres away from the New Town apartment where Anar was reportedly murdered and his body was dismembered, according to Indian media reports.
On May 28, the Kolkata CID recovered four kilograms of flesh from a septic tank of Sanjeeva Garden of Kolkata.
