The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the bail of Juba Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia which was granted by the High Court in the last case relating to amassing illegal wealth.

The vacation chamber judge, Justice Jahangir Hossain, upheld Papia鈥檚 bail on conditions that she would attend the trial court鈥檚 proceedings each date, her bail would be cancelled automatically if she fails to attend any hearing.


The apex court also directed the trial court to complete her trial in three months.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

The chamber judge issued the directive disposing of a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission challenging a High Court鈥檚 order that granted bail to Papia on Tuesday.聽

On August 4, 2020, the ACC filed a case against Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman on charge of acquiring wealth of Tk聽6.24 crore outside the known income.

Papia, who is now detained at the Cumilla Central Jail, was earlier granted bail in three other cases including a case filed against her under the Arms Act.

On October 12, 2020, a Dhaka court sentenced Papia and her husband to 27 years in prison each in the arms case.

On February 22, 2020, the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Papia and her husband at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies, and some cash.

Lawyer SM Rezaul Karim appeared for Papia while her bail was opposed by ACC lawyer Shaheen Ahmed.聽
