The government suspended Rajshahi鈥檚 Bhawaniganj municipality mayor Abdul Malek for his involvement in embezzling government funds and various corruptions.
The local government department on Thursday posted a gazette notification on its official website confirming the suspension with effect from Wednesday.
According to the gazette notification, Abdul Malek, also president of Bhawaniganj municipality Awami League, drew the payment cheque without completing the work of three out of four packages under major urban infrastructure development projects.
He also embezzled Tk聽5.86 lakh through quotations without doing any work in 2022. Besides, the mayor himself did the construction of the municipal building without any tender and signed the bill himself.
Apart from that, the government also found the allegations of embezzlement of collected municipal tax, irregularity in issuing trade licenses, negligence in the use of municipal trucks, rollers and other vehicles and illegally collecting money from vehicles on municipal roads against Abdul Malek to be true in the investigation.
In another notification issued on the same day, the government also provided the panel mayor-1 with the power to conduct the administrative and financial activities of the municipality.
