
Thousands of holidaymakers were seen rushing to the bus and train stations and launch terminals in the capital and adjacent areas to travel across the country ahead of Eid-ul-Azha on Saturday.
After holiday began at many apparel factories, traffic congestion increased on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge and Dhaka–Mymensingh national highways as thousands of apparel workers started their Eid journey.
Workers of an apparel factory on the day formed a human chain at Barabari area in Gazipur metropolitan city demanding arrears stopping vehicular movement for some time on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway.
Many passengers alleged being forced to pay extra amid transport shortages.
Many people were seen travelling by goods-laden trucks and pickup vans illegally.
Most of the trains on the day ran on schedule while many travelled on the train roofs risking their lives.
This year, Eid-ul-Azha has fallen on June 17 and the three-day public holiday starts today.
People have started journey to different districts since June 13 which was followed by two-day weekly holiday on Friday and Saturday.
In Gazipur, since morning a huge number of vehicles, especially passenger-laden ones, were seen moving towards the Dhaka–Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highways.
Vehicles were seen standing on long queues at Chandra in the afternoon as thousands of apparel workers started their Eid journey.
Many trucks and pickup vans were seen carrying passengers in the area.
Workers of the National Chemical Manufacturing Company Limited formed a human chain in Barabari area under Gacha police in Gazipur metropolitan city around 12 noon for few minutes demanding arrears, said Gacha police officer-in-charge Ziaul Islam.
Due to their human chains vehicles on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway was closed for few minutes, he added.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Tangail reported that from the early hours of Saturday till noon vehicles on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway ran slowly on a 14-kilometre stretch from the east side of the bridge to Elenga area.
The situation was seen after the toll collection on the bridge remained closed for few hours in the early hours of Saturday and some vehicles went out of order on the bridge.
Due to the slow pace of vehicles, the passengers and transport workers suffered amid hot and humid weather.
Many trucks and pick-up vans from the capital to the northern routes were seen carrying people illegally openly in front of the law enforcers.
Bangabandhu Bridge police officer-in-charge Md Alamgir said that from about 1:30pm till 8:00pm the vehicles could move at a normal speed on the highway.
About people traveling on goods-laden vehicles, he said that these vehicles should be stopped at the points from where these started.Â
In the capital, on the day a huge number of people were seen at the Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Saidabad inter-district bus terminals.
Many people were seen standing at the Gabtoli terminal amid a shortage of bus.
Some passengers alleged about paying extra on some routes.
A huge number of people were seen rushing to the Dhaka railway station at Kamalapur since morning, while the train journeys were smooth with no major disruption in the schedules.
Some passengers even missed trains as they arrived later than the scheduled timing.
Passengers were seen entering the trains, especially from on the north-route, even through windows.
When the fully-packed trains arrived at the Tongi station, passengers climbed the train roofs.
The launches from the Sadarghat terminal also started with a huge number of passengers.
Till 7:00pm on Saturday 80 launches left the terminal, said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority joint director Alamgir Kabir.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chattogram reported that bus passengers in the port city going to other districts suffered as buses could not leave the terminals in time because of roadside cattle markets and presence of many cattle-laden vehicles on roads.
‘We can’t maintain our schedule and face delays of even three hours to start a bus,’ said Khalil Uddin from Sohag Paribahan of Dampara branch.
Muniruzzaman, Chattogram rail station master, said that the trains ran on time while some were in trouble to get tickets at the last moment.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj reported that vehicles were seen running smoothly on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga expressway and the Padma bridge on the day.
Mawa traffic police in-charge Ziaul Haider said that since Friday afternoon the traffic congestion situation in these areas became normal and since Saturday morning vehicles were passing without any hassle.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Cumilla reported that the Eid journey on the Dhaka–Chattogram national highway was smooth across the day without traffic congestion.
United News of Bangladesh reported that a large number of holidaymakers thronged to the Paturia-Daulatdia ferry ghats since Saturday morning to cross the river while cattle-laden vehicles crossed the route smoothly.
