
Due to an onrush of water from upstream in India and a torrential downpour, the river water at Teesta barrage point was flowing near the danger level on Wednesday.
The authorities have opened 44 gates of the barrage to control the water as residents along the Teesta and Saniajan rivers fear flood.
As the water level rose, the houses of more than 500 families in chars were submerged in the water.
Lalmonirhat deputy commissioner Mohammad Ullah said that upazila nirbahi officers in their respective聽 areas were keeping their eyes on the situation.
Several residents of chars said that water started seeping into their homes from Wednesday afternoon.
On Wednesday afternoon, the flow of the Teesta at the point of Teesta Barrage, the country鈥檚 largest irrigation project, was recorded at 51.92 centimetre, .23 cm below the danger level.
As the water level of the Teesta and Saniajan rivers has increased, the low-lying areas along the banks of five upazilas of Lalmonirhat and the houses and roads of chars have been submerged under water and the ordinary people have suffered.聽
It has been found that due to the rise in Teesta water, Dahgram of Patgram, Doani of Hatibandha, Nij Sheikh Sundar of Saniajan Union, Dhubani of Singamari union, Sindurna, Patikapara, Dauabari, Bhotmari of Kaliganj upazila, Shailmari, Nohali, Char Bairati, Mahishkhocha and Sadar of Aditmari upazila have been affected.
Water is entering lower areas along the banks of the Teesta River in Khuniagach, Kalmati, Rajpur, Gokunda union under the upazila.
Mofizar Rahman of Char Sindurna said that since past night water in the Teesta River increased and houses and roads in char areas were submerged.
Fazlar Rahman Khokon, chairman of Fakirpara union parishad in Hatibandha, said that water entered the houses of about 200 to 300 families in two wards of Fakirpara union since yesterday.
He said that they informed the upazila chairman and the upazila nirbahi officer of the matter.
Dalia Water Development Board executive engineer Asfauddaula said that the water in the Teesta was increasing due to the release of water at Gazoldoba.
He said that the river was flowing 23 cm below the danger level since morning.
