Benazir Ahmed

Former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed did not appear before the Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday at its headquarters, as was scheduled, to give his statement regarding allegations of amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.

Benazir’s wife Jissan Mirza and his daughters have also been asked to appear before the commission today to give their statement regarding the graft allegations against them.

But their appearance before the ACC is also uncertain, as they left the country on May 4.

ACC secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen told journalists at a briefing that if Benazir failed to appear before the commission on Sunday, the inquiry team would follow the relevant legal procedure.

Meanwhile earlier in the morning on the day, Supreme Court lawyer M Sarwar Hossain filed an application with the ACC seeking probes into the allegations of taking over 70 per cent of the shares of Citizen Television by Benazir Ahmed and his cohorts.

Sarwar Hossain in his letter requested the ACC chairman to take into account and inquire into these new allegations against Benazir along with their ongoing probe into the allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

The lawyer’s application further said that different newspapers, including ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, reported that Benazir and his cohorts, including Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat and ruling Awami League lawmaker for Chandpur-4 constituency and Citizen TV chairman Md Shafiqur Rahman’s distant cousin Razzakul Hossain Tutul, forcibly captured 70 per cent shares of the television channel after picking up Shafiqur from his residence and bringing him to Westin hotel one midnight 4–5 years ago.

Shafiqur, in a letter sent to the media on June 1, 2024 claimed that Benazir and his associates, including Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat and Razzakul Hossain Tutul, forcibly took control of 70 per cent shares of Citizen TV.

Sarwar in his letter said that ‘It is an act of irresponsibility and suspicion on the part of Shafiqur Rahman, who being a lawmaker and a journalist leader, did not take any action regarding his own allegations.’

This affair may have connection with Mr Shafiqur Rahman’s corruption i.e. money laundering,’ the letter addressed to the ACC chairman and with subject titled ‘An application requesting probes against Shafiqur Rahman MP, Nafeez Sarafat and Razzakul Hossain Tutul and others involved’said.

Earlier, ACC chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah said that if Benazir failed to appear before the ACC, it would be assumed that he had no statement regarding the allegations.

Benazir and his family earlier missed appearing before the commission on June 6 and June 9, respectively. The ACC later rescheduled the dates to June 23 and June 24.
