
The flood situation in parts of remote north-eastern region deteriorated on Sunday as onrush of water from the upstream in India continued following heavy to very heavy rain.
The overall flood situation in northern and north-eastern region however improved with the water levels in overflowing rivers falling by up to 12 cm in the 24 hours until 9:00am.
Hundreds of thousands people still remained stranded as scores of villages remained inundated by flood water in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Moulvibazar reported that fresh low lying areas were submerged by flood water on Sunday in Borolekha, Juri and Kulaura upazilas.
Moulvibazar deputy commissioner Urmi Binte Salam said that 3.51 lakh people of 63250 families in 49 unions were affected by flood in Moulvibazar. Six thousand of the affected people have taken refuge at flood shelter centres.
Juri upazila chairman Kishore Roy Chowdhury said that flood water entered into all government offices in Juri.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Sylhet reported that around 16.5 lakh flood-affected people remained marooned in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
A total of 33,387 people were staying in the flood shelters. Of them, 19,738 were in Sylhet and 13,649 in Sunamganj flood shelters, the administrative officials said.
The latest flash flood started on June 14 at places. Sylhet divisional commissioner said that the latest flash flood affected 50 lakh people. The flood was triggered by heavy rain and onrush of water from upstream.Â
Earlier on May 28, a flash flood had affected more than one million people only in the Sylhet district, including the city, adding immense sufferings to the flood victims who have been facing now another devastating flood within less than 3 weeks getting no respite to return to normal life.
Sylhet deputy commissioner Sheikh Russell Hasan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday afternoon that 6,300 flood victims were staying so far at 40 flood shelter centres at 8 Wards of the city.
Sajjadur Rahman, chairman of the Ichhakalas union parishad under Companiganj upazila in Sylhet, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· at noon that most of the villagers of his union were living on bamboo scaffolds (machang) as their homes still remained under water or covered by mud.
‘In addition to the acute crisis of foods, shortage of pure drinking water has turned into a serious crisis for the flood affected families,’ he said, adding that all villages of his union had been inundated by the recent flood.
Flood victim Abdus Sabur, a resident of Kandagaon village at Surma union under Sadar upazila in Sunamganj, said ‘None has come so far to help us. Influential people and relatives of the union chairman and members are being allotted reliefs. We are not given anything.’
Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in a bulletin issued on Sunday afternoon said that Kushiyara, Surma, Old Surma and Someswari were flowing above their danger marks at seven points, up to 39 cm above the danger mark.
The Teesta River fell below its danger mark on Sunday but the FFWC warned that the river might swell again following potential moderate to heavy rainfall in northern region and its upstream over the next 48 hours.
Due to the flood, National University in a press release on Sunday announced the postponement of honors 4th year and degree 2nd year examinations scheduled for today. The fresh date of the exams will be announced later.
Meanwhile, a fresh heatwave set in the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajganj, Jashore and Chuadanga with chances to continue, said Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Bangladesh’s highest maximum day air temperature of 38 degrees Celsius was recorded in Rajshahi on Sunday.
News agency UNB reported that a total of 1000 hectares of Aush paddy and vegetable lands were damaged in the recent flood in nine upazilas of Habiganj district. The worst affected upazilas are Baniachong, Nabiganj and Chunarughat.
The district’s fisheries office said the fishes of 300 to 400 fish enclosures washed away by the flood water.
The BMD also predicted light to moderate rain accompanied by temporary gusty wind at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions; at few places over Chattogram division and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions today.
