A six-year-old boy died, and 70 devotees fell ill after consuming Khichuri at Baniajangal Basanti Temple in Bishnupur of Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila.
The deceased, Kabbo Datta of Jashore, passed away early Monday at Satkhira Shishu Hospital, while undergoing treatment.
Kabbo was visiting Bishnupur to see his grandparents’ house.
Bishnupur Union Parishad chairman Jahangir Alam stated that the temple authorities organised rituals during the new moon and full moon phases every year. On Saturday night, after such a ritual concluded, the authorities distributed khichuri as an offering among the Hindu devotees.
The next day, at least 70 individuals, who had consumed the food, fell ill and were admitted to various hospitals with symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea, said the chairman.
Chairman Alam added that the incident was under investigation then.
