Former prime minister and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, was shifted to a cabin from the coronary care unit of Evercare Hospital in the capital on Monday, a day after a pacemaker was implanted in her heart.
‘She [Khaleda] was shifted to a cabin with CCU facilities at 4:45pm after the medical board members visited her and reviewed everything,’ her personal physician, AZM Zahid Hossain, said.
He said that the three-time former prime minister was under close observation of doctors at the hospital.
The medical board meeting, headed by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, held a meeting on Monday afternoon, he said, adding that they had reviewed the reports of the past 12 hours before deciding to shift Khaleda Zia to the cabin.
In this meeting of the medical board, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s wife, Zubaida Rahman, from London, and some physicians from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States also connected virtually.
Khaleda has already been suffering from heart problems. As a result of three heart blockages, she had previously been stented.
The former prime minister was admitted to Evercare Hospital early Saturday.
The 79-year-old Khaleda Zia is suffering from various complications, including arthritis, heart disease, lung, liver, kidney, and diabetes.
Meanwhile, BNP on Monday accused United Hospital of behaving inhumanly with Khaleda by refusing to provide her with an ambulance after she fell sick on Friday.
While addressing an event at the party’s Naya Paltan central office seeking divine help for Khaleda’s immediate recovery, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi condemned the United Hospital authorities for denying the former prime minister required medical care.
‘If the common people of this country take away the bricks of this hospital now, then we will have nothing to do,’ Rizvi said.
Khaleda doctor Zahid alleged that he made a request to the United Hospital for an urgent ambulance service when the BNP chief fell sick on Friday night, but he was denied.
BNP has been urging the government to take Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced treatment, but the government is rejecting the plea, citing legal barriers.
The former prime minister, who was sentenced to 10 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and 7 years in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case in 2018, has been staying at her Gulshan residence since her conditional release on March 25, 2020.
