A section of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology staff members on Monday confined the university’s outgoing vice-chancellor professor Satya Prasad Majumder in his office protesting scraping of BUET guidelines on promotion.
Monday was the last working day of Satya Prasad Majumder. He could not be reached for comments.
The demonstrators in front of the VC office were seen chanting slogans ‘Our demands must be met’, and ‘Promotion guidelines must be brought back’ and vowed to continue protest until their demand would be met.
Till filing this report at 9:00pm the VC remained confined in his office.
According to the insiders, in 2015 the BUET authorities had formed the guidelines for the promotion of the universities’ officers and employees.
After formation, it was found that the 2015 guidelines had some conflicts with the government guidelines on the promotion and University Grants Commission’s approved organogram.
Following these, the university formed a review committee.
At the 540th meeting of the BUET syndicate held on December 27 last year, decision was taken that no BUET official/employee would be considered for promotion, selection grade and senior grade scale through the 2015 guidelines after December 27, 2023.
After December 27, all eligible positions for promotion, selection grade and senior grade scale would be considered based on the government guidelines and UGC approved organogram, decision was also taken.
On Sunday, the BUET authorities issued an office order regarding these.
Soon after the news spread, on Monday a section of BUET officials and employees blocked the VC in his office in the afternoon.
Mohammad Ismail, an assistant librarian, said that an order from last year was only brought to their attention on Monday which order went against the interests of BUET Staff.
‘As soon as we learned about it at 4 pm today, we confined the Vice Chancellor and will continue our protest until this order is revoked,’ he added.
The Sunday office order also read that the positions of those who had been promoted, upgraded, given selection grade, or senior grade scale through the 2015 guidelines before December 27, 2023 would remain unchanged.
It also read that all decisions would be sent to the UGC for approval.
