Former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed’s wife, Jissan Mirza, and their daughters did not show up on Monday at the Anti-Corruption Commission to give statements over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

Benazir’s wife, Jissan, and two daughters, Farheen Rista and Tahseen Raisa, were scheduled to appear at ACC headquarters at 10:00am but they did not appear, said ACC secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen.

She said that they did not submit any time petitions, but sent written statements to the ACC on Thursday, explaining their position regarding the corruption allegations against them.

‘ The ACC inquiry team is taking the necessary actions to this end in line with the law, and we hope that the ACC team will be able to submit its inquiry report within the stipulated timeframe,’ Khorsheda said.

The commission will take its decision regarding them based on the inquiry report, she added.

Earlier, Benazir, who is now staying aboard along with his family members, also failed to appear before  the ACC on Sunday but sent a written statement to the commission on Thursday.

Benazir and his family earlier missed the schedule of appearing before the commission on June 6 and June 9, respectively, which prompted the ACC to reschedule the dates to June 23 and June 24 for their appearance.

Earlier, in three phases, a Dhaka court ordered the seizure of a total of 697 bighas of land in Gopalganj, Madaripur, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, and Narayanganj districts, 12 flats in Dhaka, and shares in 21 companies in the name of Benazir and his family.

The court also ordered the freezing of a Tk 30 lakh investment in savings certificates, 33 bank accounts, and three BO (Beneficiary Owner’s) accounts.

The ACC, based on a media report, decided on April 18 to investigate allegations of amassing illegal wealth by Benazir and his family.

Benazir joined the police force as an assistant superintendent of police in February 1988 and retired on September 30, 2022.

On December 10, 2021, the United States declared then-IGP Benazir ineligible for entry into the country for ‘gross violations of human rights’ while serving as the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion.
