As electricity bills left unpaid, the Bangladesh Power Development Board has cut off power connections to Chattogram Medical College and Chattogram Railway office in the port city on Monday morning.
PDB, however, has cut off only the Medical College’s connection while the hospital’s electricity connection remains unaffected and ensures continued medical services for numerous patients.
Chattogram BPDB chief engineer Humayun Kabir said that the college and hospital owe nearly Tk 1.29 crore and the Railway owes around Tk 1.58 crore in unpaid bills over the past six months, with the college alone, owing Tk 60 lakh.
‘We have informed both the state-run organisations and their negligence compelled us to take action today, both the administration offices got power supply disconnected at 11:00am on Monday.’
We, however, resumed their power supply around 5:00pm in the afternoon, he added.
In a written statement, Sahena Akter, principal of Chittagong Medical College, said that the BPDB disconnected the college building’s electricity connection due to unpaid bills.
The letter also said that due to a lack of sufficient budget for electricity bill, CMC was unable to pay the bills last six months.
After the incident, the college authority sent to the concerned ministry to increase the budget to avoid unwanted situations in the upcoming days.
Shrinking budget by the Railway Ministry and undue bills put us in trouble sometimes, said Saiful Islam, divisional railway manager of Chattogram Railway.
He said we informed the ministry to increase the budget after facing a power cut at another office of the Railway earlier, but it was ignored.
