
Dhaka stocks advanced on Tuesday after witnessing a fall in the previous session, as the session saw volatile trading with investors being active on both sides of the trading fence, market operators said.
DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, increased by 21.65 points, or 0.41 per cent, to close at 5,241.83 points on the day after losing 26.95 points in the previous trading session.
The key index witnessed a sharp spike at the start of Tuesday’s session, and maintained the positive vibe for half an hour, but the trading board got unstable after the first half an hour and maintained the trend until the end of the session, market operators said.
With the rise in the investors’ activity on the day, the total turnover of the Dhaka bourse increased to Tk 524.56 crore compared with that of Tk 479.86 crore in the previous session.
In the past 18 weeks, the DSE moved forward in only four weeks.
Market operators said that investors were jittery as there was no significant improvement sign on the market.
Of the 394 issues traded on Tuesday, 171 advanced, 162 declined and 61 remained unchanged.
The DSE Shariah index increased by 6.70 points, or 0.58 per cent, to close at 1,149.55 points on the day.
The DS30 index lost 9.94 points, or 0.53 per cent, to finish at 1,877.94 points.
On the sectoral front, pharmaceutical issues exerted the highest turnover, followed by the food and life insurance shares.
EBL Securities in its daily commentary said, ‘The market extended its volatility throughout the session as cautious investors continued to remain observant owing to the persistent pessimism across the trading floor, while investors’ buying interest in particular large capitalised scrips helped the core index to close in green.’
Unilever Consumer Care topped the turnover chart on the day with its shares worth Tk 53.71 crore changing hands.
Rupali Life Insurance, Beach Hatchery, BRAC Bank, Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa, Capitec Grameen Bank Growth Fund, British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Orion Pharma, Asiatic Laboratories and Fortune Shoes were the other turnover leaders.
