Pabna Senior District and Sessions Judge Court on Wednesday sentenced a Belarusian citizen to life term imprisonment on charge of killing Kazakh national Svets Vladimir who worked at Rooppur nuclear power plant project at Ishwardi upazila of Pabna.
Judge Mohammad Waliul Islam announced the verdict in presence of the lone convict Mataviev Vladimir, 43, an official of Ruppur nuclear power plant project Trust Rosem.
The court also fined the convict Tk 25,000, in default to suffer three more months in jail.
The court, however, acquitted two other Belarusian citizens — Urbanovichs Vitaly and Fedorovich Gennedy — as the charges against them could not be proved beyond doubt.
Public prosecutor Abdus Samad Khan Ratan appeared before the court for the state while lawyers Mukul Biswas and Hedayet Ul Islam for the accused.
SM Arif Alam, for the plaintiff, and KM Muraduzzamanan, for the defence, also assisted as interpreters.
According to the case, on March 26, 2022, the body of Kazakh citizen Svets Vladimir and his injured brother were recovered from a building in Green City residential area, a residential area for foreigners at Rooppur nuclear power plant project.
The deceased was working as a labourer director (foreman) of contractor firm Nikim in Rooppur project.
Nikim company director Vedorov Yury filed a case with Ishwardi police station accusing three Belarusian citizens over the incident.
After the investigation, on May 27, 2022, the police submitted a charge sheet against the three accused in the case.
