The Dhaka North City Corporation decided to suspend the eviction activities of the Karwan Bazar kitchen market for a temporary period.

The DNCC, in a circular issued on June 20, said that the decision to evict the wholesale kitchen market was suspended due to unavoidable reasons.

The city authorities earlier took a programme to remove all abandoned structures, including Kacha Market, Kitchen Market and Arat Bhaban at Kawran Bazar for their relocation to Gabtoli and Jatrabari on the periphery of Dhaka city.

The fresh date for the eviction of the kitchen market from the busy area would be announced later through a letter, according to the circular.

When asked, DNCC chief executive officer Mir Khairul Alam said, ‘The eviction activities of the Karwan Bazar kitchen market were supposed to begin on June 22. However, we decided to postpone the activity considering it falls immediately after Eid.’

He mentioned that the activities might start at any time.

On March 19, DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam, at a discussion, said that the two-storey Karwan Bazar wholesale kitchen market for raw materials would be demolished after Eid-ul-Fitr.

On March 29, the DNCC started to relocate its regional office from the bazar wholesale kitchen market building, which was identified as risky.

On May 11, 2023, the DNCC authorities faced resistance from traders when they went to seal the risky building.
