
Four employees of a catering service were arrested after a female passenger was allegedly raped by them in a moving train on the Sylhet-Chattogram route in the early hours of Wednesday.
Railway authorities suspended the on-duty train guard for his negligence.
They also suspended all services of the catering service provider company, SA Corporation for an indefinite period.
A case was filed and a four-member railway committee was formed for probing the incident.
The Railway Police arrested three people on Wednesday, one on Thursday and a Chattogram court sent them all to the jail.
The arrested people are Abdur Rob Rasel, 28, Jamal, 27, M Sharif and Rashed, 27, said Chattogram railway police station officer-in-charge M Shahidul Islam.
They all are staff of SA Corporation catering service which was appointed by the railway for two intercity trains – Udayan Express and Paharika Express – on the Chattogram-Sylhet route, said railway general manager (East zone) Nazmul Islam.
The 19 year-old victim also did not have any ticket and sit at the food serving compartment, said police.
Railway chief commercial manager (east zone) Md Mahbubur Rahman said that the Udayan Express train started from Sylhet at 10:00pm on Tuesday towards Chattogram.
Shahidul Islam said that the incident took place around 4:00am on Wednesday while passing Laksham area.
The police came to know about the incident after the train reached Chattogram on Wednesday morning and the girl complained to railway police against the four, he continued.
‘We arrested Jamal, Sharif and Rashed immediately after the incident and sent the victim to the one-stop crisis centre of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment,’ the police officer said.
He said that, acting on a tip-off, a team of railway police conducted a drive in Kutobpur area under Begumganj upazila in Noakhali around 5:00am on Thursday and arrested Rasel.
He further said that the victim filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at the station on Wednesday.
She is from Bandarban district while she went to Sylhet to visit her brother; Shahidul Islam said and added that their petition for a seven-day remand for the arrested would be heard on July 1 in the court.
Railway general manager Nazmul Islam said that they had suspended the train guard Abdur Rahim on Wednesday as he knew nothing about the incident.
‘We have suspended the catering service provider company’s activities on Udayan and Paharika expresses for an indefinite period,’ he said and added that the probe committee would submit report by a week.
Asked about the repeated rape incidents in trains, he said that the incidents are isolated.
‘We are strengthening our monitoring inside the trains,’ he added.
Earlier on January 17, a train attendant named Akkas Ali of ‘Lalmoni Express’ raped a 14 year-old girl inside an empty cabin after she failed to show ticket.
In a statement, Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh expressed grave concern and demanded strong action of the authorities over the incident.
Despite investment of lakhs of crores taka in the development of railway, the safety and security of the passengers were under threats, it also read.
