Leaders of Bangladesh Garment Sramik Samhati on Friday at a protest rally in Dhaka called on the government to keep an allocation in the proposed budget for financial year 2024-25 for the introduction of a rationing system for garment workers.

The Samhati organised the rally in front of the National Press Club where its president Taslima Akhter chaired.

Taslima Akhter demanded keeping a special allocation in the proposed budget for introduction of the rationing system for garment workers so that they could buy essential commodities at cheaper prices.

‘More than 45 lakh garment workers of the country are low-paid and they could not run their families by wages they get. So introduction of a rationing system for them is essential,’ Taslima said.

She said that the proposed upcoming budget would be passed in Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday where the allocation should be included.

She also demanded cancellation of provision of legalising undisclosed money of the looters in the budget.

General secretary of the organisation Babul Hossain, central leaders FM Nurul Islam, Prabir Saha, Jidul Islam, Shamim Hossain and others spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
