No decision has been made till Sunday night over the metro rail fare hike from Monday following the exemption of the Value Added Tax on tickets.

The exemption of the VAT on metro rail tickets was in effect till June 30.

The National Board of Revenue issued an office order on April 4 to impose VAT on the services from July 1.

MAN Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, the implementing agency of the metro rail, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Sunday evening that they had earlier sent a request to the NBR through the road transport and bridges ministry to review the decision of imposing VAT on the metro rail ticket fare.

‘We are waiting for the reply to the review proposal,’ he said, adding, ‘we are expecting no hike in the metro rail fare before the response.’

If a general 15 per cent VAT is imposed, the lowest and the highest fares will be Tk 23 and Tk 115 respectively instead of Tk 20 and Tk 100 respectively.

MAN Siddique continued that they were also checking the technical sides.

‘In cases of single journey ticket, it will be difficult for a passenger to pay Tk 23 as the culture of using coins is not popular in Bangladesh,’ he added.

The country’s first-ever electricity-powered elevated and air-conditioned rail system is in operation now on the 20.1-kilometre-long Uttara-Motijheel route every day except Fridays.
