The Birth Centenary Celebration Committee of Khan Sarwar Murshid announced this at a press conference at the National Press Club organised by cultural organisation Uttarsuri on Monday.
Convener of the committee Professor Fakrul Alam, co-convenor Professor Parveen Hasan, Dhaka University professor emeritus Syed Manzoorul Islam and Nagorik Uddyog chief executive Zakir Hossain spoke at the event.
Uttarsuri secretary general Sharmeen Murshid delivered a welcome speech at the conference moderated by poet-artist and Uttarsuri director Mustafa Zaman.
鈥楽arwar Murshid and his generation are still relevant. This committee and other institutions will observe various programmes on his birth centenary throughout the year in the hope that the youth will know and understand them in shaping the future society,鈥 said Sharmeen Murshid in her speech.聽
鈥楽arwar Murshid not only participated in the education, culture and political rights movement of Bangladesh, but also worked tirelessly to improve the quality of education and culture of the newly independent country,鈥 Sharmeen also said.
Syed Manzoorul Islam said, 鈥榃e are going through a bad time because the power of culture is decaying and many opponents are against practicing free-thinking in the country. The level of education is lowering while students have been used to memorising and the ultimate goal of education has been seeking a job.鈥
鈥楽arwar Murshid is always thinking of growing the public intellectual besides being a university teacher. His edited magazine 鈥淣ew Values鈥 is rare in this society now. I hope a special collection of 鈥淣ew Values鈥 will be published on his birth centenary,鈥 said Syed Manzoorul Islam.聽
Zakir Hossain said Khan Sarwar Murshid played an important role in establishing private institutions in the country.
Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Nagorik Uddyog and Uttarsuri will also organise events to celebrate the birth centenary of Khan Sarwar Murshid.
