Bangladesh left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam headed into the 2024 T20 World Cup as the team’s first choice for the new ball but after an injury to his bowling hand in the lead-up to the tournament, he did not get even one match, leaving him disappointed.
In Bangladesh’s warm-up game against India, Shoriful split the webbing in his left hand while trying to stop a shot from Hardik Pandya.
As he had to have stitches in the injured hand, the pacer was ruled out of the first two Bangladesh games – against Sri Lanka and South Africa – in which Tanzim Hasan Sakib, his replacement, performed brilliantly to make himself a mainstay in the XI, leading to Shoriful not getting picked in the next five games.
‘You can’t do anything about what is written in your fate. I had really hoped that I will at least play one match. So, there’s some pain about that,’ Shoriful said at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport ahead of leaving for the Lanka Premier League, where he will play for Jaffna Kings.
‘I was ready for every match but those who were in the XI were doing very well. Maybe that is why I did not get a match.’
The pacer hoped to make an impression at the franchise tournament to mark his return to the playing field.
‘I am going to the LPL and will try to give my best. I haven’t played a match in some time, so hoping that I can come back by playing here,’ he said.
