Ten crew members were rescued from the capsized cargo ship MV Prince in the Meghna River Wednesday afternoon, confirmed sub-inspector Omar Farooq of Kaliganj naval police station.

The rescued are driver Rezaul Karim, greaser Faisal, Lashkar Rajib, Rifat Sheikh, Rahat, Yasin Howladar, sukani Kabir, Alamgir, Enayet Hossain Sardar and master Md Noman.


The MV Prince capsized due to a crack in its bottom near the Ulania Launch Ghat at Mehendiganj upazila in Barishal at about 2:30pm while carrying gypsum.

Naval police sources stated that the cargo ship left Payra Port with 900 tonnes of gypsum headed for Narayanganj on June 28. It anchored at Kaliganj area of Mehendiganj Tuesday night and departed for Narayanganj Wednesday morning. However, the front part of the ship collided with an underwater shoal, causing a crack at the bottom.

The crew attempted to take the cargo to the adjacent shore, but the vessel capsized in the Meghna.

Meanwhile, the crew members called 999 for help. The naval police rushed to the spot, safely rescued the crew, and brought them to shore.

The cargo captain, Muhammad Noman, said that they were in the custody of the naval police in the Ulania Launch Ghat area then and that the cargo owner had been informed.
