
At least five Hindu devotees were killed and fifty more were injured in electrocution while they were participating in a Ratha Yatra procession in Bogura district on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Alok Kumar, 42, son of late Narendra Kumar of Kulupara village under Shibganj upazila, Srimati Ranjita, 60, daughter of late Sudeb of Gohail village under Shajahanpur upazila, Naresh Mohanta, 60, son of late Bhabani Mahanta of Kundugram village under Adamdighi upazila, Srimati Atoshi Rani, 40, wife of Lankeswar of Tanmatha Railgate area, and Joly Rani, 35, wife of Basudeb of Shahapara village under Shariakandi upazila.
‘The incident occurred in Seujgari Jamtala area in the district town at about 5:15pm, leaving five people, including three women, dead on the spot,’ said Bogura additional superintendent of police Sumon Ranjan Poddar.
At least 37 of the injured were admitted to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital with two of them taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, the local police confirmed.
Witnesses said that several thousand devotees joined a Ratha Yatra procession that started from the Seujgari ISKCON Temple in the district town at 5:00pm.
When the procession reached Seujgari Amtola intersection, the top part of the Ratha, a divine carriage, came into contact with a high voltage live wire, resulting in a fire that injured over 50 people.
The injured were rushed to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital and the Bogra 250 Bed Mohammad Ali District Hospital.
Of the injured, Alok Kumar, Atoshi Rani, Naresh Mohanta, and Ranjita Mahanta were declared dead by on-duty doctors at Shaheed Zia hospital, while Joly Rani succumbed to her injures at the other hospital.
Bogura Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Firoza Parvin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the district administration announced that it would give Tk 25,000 for each of the deceased for funeral.
‘We will also provide necessary assistance to those injured if they require better treatment,’ she added.
