A Pabna court on Sunday sent a doctor and the owner of a medical diagnostic centre to jail allegedly for sexually harassing a female patient during a checkup.

The accused are Sovan Kumar Sarkar, a physician of the clinic and a resident of the town, and Jiban Ali, owner of New Medipath Diagnostic Centre and a resident of Shalgaria area of Pabna town.


Pabna Chief Judicial Magistrate Kamal Hossain rejected their bail appeal and ordered them to be sent to judicial custody.

Earlier on Saturday evening, Pabna police arrested them from the clinic located nearby the Pabna sadar police station. The accused were produced in the court at noon, said Zulfikar Haider, general registration officer of the court.

According to the complaint, the woman along with her husband went to the clinic for an ultrasonography on Saturday evening. The woman was taken to the designated room and prepared by applying gel at the lower abdomen by a female assistant.

Meanwhile, Sovan Kumar Sarkar sent the female assistant outside the room and touched the patient's private parts and talked sexually. Immediately the patient came out and told the matter to her husband triggering an argument.

The clinic owner threatened the patient and her husband not to disclose the matter. Later, the victims took shelter at the police station and lodged a complaint.

Pabna Police Station inspector (OC investigation) Shahidul Islam said that the accused were arrested based on the complaint. Later they were handed over to the court after legal proceedings against them.
