Rail communications across Bangladesh disrupted on Monday as students blocked the rail tracks at different places including Rajshahi, Chattogram and Mymensingh demanding cancellation of the High Court order that reinstated 30 per cent quotas for freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren in government jobs.

The students blocked the tracks from morning at places and they withdrew their blockade in the afternoon.


Passengers suffered on different routes as they became stranded inside trains and different stations.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Rajshahi correspondent reported that rail communication between Rajshahi and the rest of the country remained suspended as a group of students of Rajshahi University students blocked the rail tracks near the university central graveyard at about 11:30am on Monday.

Witnesses said that the students blocked the rail tracks under the Rajshahi University of Enigeering and Technology overpass and staged a sit-in programme there to press home their demand.

The protesters withdrew their blockade at about 4:00pm.

Abdul Karim, station manager of Rajshahi Rail Station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that intercity Dhumketu Express Train had been stranded at Haryana rail station while Kapotakkha Express Train at Sardah Road rail station due to the blockade.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reported that the students of Bangladesh Agricultural University blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh rail track for the third day on Monday.

They blocked the track at about 1:30pm near Jabbar intersection of the university.

At that time, they stopped the Jamalpur Express on Dhaka-Jamalpur route and chanted slogans.

They withdrew the blockade at about 4:00pm.

The students also blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram track near Muradpur area in Chattogram at 4:00pm on Monday by blocking the Cox’s Bazar express on Cox’s Bazar-Dhaka route.

Train passengers told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the students withdrew the blockade at about 4:45pm.
