The 135th anniversary of the birth of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova was observed on Tuesday.

To mark the day, the Russian house in Dhaka in cooperation with the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh organised an event at the Social Garden-1 of IDEB Bhaban, Kakrail in the capital.


Director of the Russian house Pavel Dvoychenkov delivered welcome speech at the event.

The IDEB president AKMA Hamid, the IDEB international affairs secretary Md Kamruzzaman Nayan and the Military Institute of Science and Technology associate professor Olga Roy also spoke at the event,  which comprised discussion, poem recitation and film screening.

Pavel Dvoychenkov said that Anna Akhmatova was a prominent Russian poet of the 20th century, known for her human feeling and poignant poetry.

‘This year we are celebrating the fifty years of the Russian house in Dhaka, and we want to organise a series of collaborative events about art, culture and education as a sign of the bilateral relationship of two countries,’ he mentioned.

Olga Roy talked about the life and work of the poet, shedding light on her personal and collective trauma experienced during the Soviet totalitarianism.

Recitation artistes Momtaz Rahman, Osman Goni, Sirajum Maniar and Mia Bacchu recited Anna Akhmatova’s poems at the programme.

A film titled The Flying Ship, directed by Ilya Uchitel, based on a Soviet cartoon made by Garry Bardin in 1979, was screened at the programme.
