
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday filed two cases against the ruling Awami League Singair upazila general secretary, Md Shahidur Rahman, known as VP Shahid, and his wife, Nargis Aktar, on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 3.47 crore.
The ACC assistant director Al Amin filed the cases with its integrated district office in Dhaka, accusing the couple, said an ACC official Aktarul Islam.
The commission filed a case against Nargis Aktar on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 2.92 crore beyond her known sources of income.
According to the case statement, Nargis showed her movable and immovable wealth worth Tk 3.35 crore in a statement submitted to the ACC on January 1, 2021.
The commission found that she amassed wealth worth Tk 3.80 crore against her legal sources of income worth Tk 87.73 lakh. The rest of the wealth she owned beyond her known sources of income.
The ACC also found that a house owned by Nargis was built on 12.50 decimal lands at Singair in Manikganj, which construction costs she showed of Tk 2.28 crore, but the commission found the actual costs to be Tk 2.74 crore, said the case statement.
Nargist concealed information about her wealth worth Tk 30 lakh in her statement submitted to the ACC.
The commission also filed another case against VP Shahid, on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 55.72 lakh.
According to his case statement, he showed wealth worth Tk 1.85 crore in the statement submitted to the ACC on January 1, 2021.
After scrutinising his tax return and other documents, the commission found that his total wealth worth Tk 2.04 crore, and his wealth stood at Tk 1.86 crore excluding a Tk 18 lakh bank loan.
The commission, however, found that he amassed wealth worth Tk 1.31 crore from legal sources of income, but the rest of the wealth worth Tk 55.72 lakh was owned illegally.
