The National Human Rights Commission chairman Kamal Uddin Ahmed on Thursday said that it was important to ensure proper coordination and adjustment of issues related to quota in the government jobs.

The NHRC has been closely monitoring the overall situation regarding students’ anti-quota movement since July 1, applauding the fact that the movement has been peaceful and violence-free so far, said a statement issued on Thursday.

Urging the students to respect the decision of the Supreme Court on the quota issue, the commission said, ‘It is necessary to keep a well-thought-out and well-considered recruitment system.’

The statement also stressed that normal life was being disrupted due to the blocking of roads and highways by the agitating students.

‘There are severe disruptions in the transportation of goods and treatment of patients. As a result of which, public suffering has reached an extreme level,’ it said.

Kamal Uddin Ahmed also said that the merit-based national culture should be developed keeping the rights and inclusion of all at the centre.

‘Proper evaluation of merit is necessary in the effort to create a knowledge-based society. On the other hand, the quota system has issues related to employment rights, rights of the disabled and other disadvantaged groups and national consciousness,’ it said.

The commission feels that a permanent solution can be found by logically coordinating the demands of the students in the implementation of the 2018 circular.

The decision given by the Supreme Court taking the overall issue into consideration is a significant step in resolving the crisis, Kamal said, hoping that the normal environment of education would return in the universities and colleges.
