Hundreds of quota protesters gathered at the Shahbagh crossing in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on Friday and vowed to resist intimidation against students protesting against the reinstatement of quotas in public services and demanding reform in the system.
Quota protesters, comprising students of Dhaka University and other educational institutions, blocked Shahbagh from 5:00pm to 6:30pm and protested against Thursday’s attacks on students and acts of intimidation by the police and Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League’s student wing, in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
The students, who gathered there under the banner of Students Movement Against Discrimination, warned that they would resist attempts to disrupt their peaceful protest.
‘We will resist attempts to intimidate us. We will not remain silent if anyone threatens quota protesters anywhere in the country,’ said Abu Bakar Mazumdar, a co-coordinator of the Students Movement Against Discrimination, before the students left the Shahbagh crossing at 6:30pm.
He said that students would conduct online and offline meetings on Saturday and announce their next protest programme organising a press conference at 6:00pm.
The students continued their protests for the 12th consecutive day on Friday defying warnings from the government, AL, the police and the BCL.
