
The Editors’ Council on Tuesday expressed its concern and condemnation over the attacks on journalists engaged in covering the ongoing protests demanding quota reform in government jobs that injured at least 25 news professionals.
Some of the injured journalists were receiving treatment at different hospitals, said a statement issued by the council.
Attacking news professionals while they were carrying out their duties were concerning and condemnable, the statement said, urging all parties and law and order agencies to ensure safety of on-duty journalists.
Journalists go to different programmes to gather information as part of their duty to bring the news before people, the statement said, adding that facing attacks while performing duty was very concerning.
Eight journalists were injured in Jahangirnagar University on July 15, six in Dhaka University area on July 16 and nine more in Chattogram, Dinajpur and Bogura the same day, the statement said.
The statement was signed by the council president Mahfuz Aanam and its general secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud.
