Police fired tear gas and sound grenades on Wednesday afternoon at protesting students of Dhaka University, who held a coffin procession after conducting a 'gayebana jazana' for six individuals killed on Tuesday.

The students' protests against the quota system for government jobs across Bangladesh turned deadly after police and supporters of the ruling Awami League attacked the demonstrators on Tuesday, resulting in violent clashes throughout the country, particularly on and around the campuses of public and private universities.

The DU correspondent from the spot reported that a clash broke out between the protesters and the police and it continued till about 5:30pm.

Hasnat Abdullah, co-coordinator of the Students Movement Against Discrimination, said that although the students brought out a peaceful coffin procession, the police attacked it at about 3:30pm.

When Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner for crime and operations Khandaker Mohid Uddin was asked why the police fired tear gas and sound grenades at the protesting students of DU, he hung up the phone.
