No city service buses were seen running in the capital city Dhaka since Thursday morning.

No long-route buses left Dhaka on the day from three inter-district bus terminals.


Following the student protests for quota reform the highways surrounding the city — Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Aricha were being blocked at different entrance points.

The bus owners said that they had stopped their services fearing vandalism and due to shortage of passengers.

A shutdown called by Anti-discrimination Student Movement was underway with protesters blocking roads and highways in Dhaka and other places across the country since Thursday morning.

Since morning very few people were seen on the roads in the capital.

Almost no city service buses were seen on roads.

Dhaka Road Transport Owners’ Association organising secretary Mahbubur Rahman said that the owners stopped plying their buses fearing vandalism.

The association did not give them any instructions to stop services, he added.

Amid a low number of the passengers, no inter-district buses left Dhaka on the day from Mohakgali, Gabtoli and Saidabad bus terminals.

Mohakhali bus terminal owners’ association president Md Abul Kalam said that they were not running buses since Wednesday night fearing vandalism.

'Who will take risks in this situation,' he asked.

At Gabtoli, Shymoli Paribahan general manager Md Alamgir said that no buses left the terminal in the morning.

'Some of our buses were vandalised in Jatrabari area last night,' he mentioned and added that the number of passengers in the terminal was only a handful.

Services of the metro rail in the capital were normal on the day, said the officials.

No news of any disruption in railway services was found on the day.
