
Dhaka stocks dropped for the second day in volatile trading on Thursday amid the countrywide shutdown enforced by the quota reform protesters, market operators said.
DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, decreased by 36.64 points, or 0.66 per cent, to close at 5,446.50 points on the day, after losing 1.82 points in the previous session, Tuesday.
Trading on the bourse remained closed on Wednesday on the occasion of Ashura.
The key index on Thursday started the session with a dive, and maintained the volatile trading till the end of the session, ultimately finishing in the negative trajectory.
Saiful Islam, managing director of the Brac EPL Stock Brokerage Ltd, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that many investors could not reach the brokerage houses to trade due to the shutdown.
‘Also, as the internet services are slow, many investors could not avail the digital trading services,’ he said.
The total turnover of the Dhaka bourse decreased by almost Tk 200 crore, standing at Tk 371.52 crore, comparing with that of Tk 564.41 crore in the previous session.
Market operators said that a section of investors chose to adopt a cautious approach, staying on the sidelines and closely monitoring market movements.
In the past 21 weeks, the DSE moved forward in only seven weeks.
Of the 395 issues traded on Thursday, 38 advanced, 311 declined and 46 remained unchanged.
The DSE Shariah index decreased by 10.43 points, or 0.86 per cent, to close at 1,191.43 points on the day.
The DS30 index gained 8.10 points, or 0.41 per cent, to finish at 1,953.26 points.
On the sectoral front, pharmaceutical issues exerted the highest turnover, followed by the bank and food shares.
EBL Securities in its daily commentary said, ‘The market witnessed a mild volatile swing as investors were active on both sides of the trading fence, while sellers ended up on a slightly dominant side by the end of the session.’
Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa topped the turnover chart on the day with its shares worth Tk 15.86 crore changing hands.
Grameenphone, Orion Infusion, Agni Systems, Beach Hatchery, Gemini Sea Food, Sonali Paper & Board Mills, BRAC Bank, NRB Bank and Crystal Insurance were the other turnover leaders.
