
The prices of most of the commodities went up on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka on Friday amid the nationwide shutdown demanding quota reforms, traders said.
They said that the prices of vegetables, onions, broiler chicken, eggs and fish witnessed a fresh rise on the markets in the city due to a supply shortage, as transports remained almost suspended for the past two days due to the student movement.
They said that the prices of onions and eggs had started decreasing in the previous few days, but the prices rose again on Friday on the city’s wholesale markets.
The prices of all vegetables increased by Tk 20-30 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
Aubergine sold for Tk 80-100 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 60-70 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 80-100 a kilogram, gourds for Tk 80-100 apiece, okra for Tk 80 a kilogram and pointed gourd for Tk 50-60 a kilogram on the day.
The prices of green chillies also increased by Tk 40-50 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 260-300 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The onion prices increased by Tk 10-15 a kilogram in the past two days and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 115-130 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 120-130 a kilogram on the day.
The prices of onions had gone down to Tk 105-110 a kilogram at the end of the past week due to imports of the item from India.
The prices of broiler chicken increased by Tk 10 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 180-190 a kilogram on Friday.
Locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–700 a kilogram on the day.
Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 350–380 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The price of eggs increased by Tk 4-5 a hali (four pieces) and the items sold for Tk 50 a hali in the city on the day.
The prices of eggs had decreased to Tk 45 a hali from Tk 50-52 a hali in the past week.
The prices of fish increased by Tk 40-50 a kilogram on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
Rohita sold for Tk 350-450 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 340–450 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.
Pangas sold for Tk 220–280 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 240–300 a kilogram on Friday.
Retailers said that the presence of consumers also decreased on the kitchen markets due to the ongoing unrests.
