The curfew on Tuesday passed a more slackened fourth day with many people seen moving on the roads and the government deciding to reopen offices from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Wednesday and Thursday.

The ongoing curfew will be relaxed in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Narsingdi districts from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Wednesday and Thursday, according to home ministry officials.


Confirming the government decision about continuing the curfew for an indefinite period, home ministry public relations officer Sharif Mahmud told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the administrations of the rest of the districts would decide whether or when to relax the curfew in their respective jurisdictions.  

The government imposed curfew and deployed army on midnight past Friday amid countrywide student protests that turned violent. 

At least 158 people, including one more died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning, were killed across the country in the clashes between protesters and law enforcement agencies.

The victim was identified as Hridoy Chandra Tarua, 21, a student of Chittagong University history department, who was injured while protesting at Baddarhat in Chattogram on Thursday, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia.

Quoting public administration minister Farhad Hossain, the United News of Bangladesh reported that the government offices would work from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Wednesday and Thursday.

The banks and courts would fix their office timing, the minister added.

City bus services would resume at 10:00am and continue till 5:00pm, while different long route buses would start operation from 10:00am on trial basis today, according to Bangladesh Bus-Truck Owners’ Association.  

Association chairman Ramesh Chandra Ghosh said that few long-route buses on different routes from Dhaka would start today at 10:00am on trial basis.

Ramesh, also managing director of Shyamloi Paribahan, said that they would also observe the situation on roads.

Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association leader Mahbubur Rahman said that they had taken the decision to operate city bus services between 10:00am and 5:00pm.

In Dhaka city on Tuesday, a good number of people were seen hanging out in the roads during the curfew except some areas, including those around the High Court, Rampura Bridge, Sangsad Bhaban, Bangladesh Bank and Prime Minister’s Office, heavily guarded by the army personnel. 

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent’s visits from Mayor Hanif Flyover to Siddhirganj in Narayanganj district on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway from 12 noon to 1:00pm on Tuesday found no protesters on the streets during the curfew time, while the curfew was relaxed from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

Army, Rapid Action Battalion and police took position and patrolled with Armed Personnel Carriers on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, country’s one of the major highways.

Youths were seen playing cricket in many areas, including Hatirjheel, Banglamotor and Dholaikhal, while a large number of people seen hanging out in alleys and on main roads in many areas in the capital during the curfew.

No protesters were seen in the capital’s Rampura and Badda which were battlegrounds from Thursday to Sunday.

No buses left from Mohakhali and Gabtoli terminals, but a handful of buses left Saidabad Bus Terminal.

At Abdullahpur some intercity buses were seen going to other districts.

The police were seen to arrest people during visits near the Kadamtali and Rampura police stations between 2:30pm and 6:00pm Tuesday.

According to a report of the Agence France Presse, the number of arrests in days of violence in Bangladesh passed 2,500 on Tuesday. 

After five-day shutdown of mobile and broadband internet connections, the government on Tuesday night reopened internet connections in places but Facebook and YouTube could not be accessed. 

President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday appreciated the efficiency and professionalism of the Bangladesh Army to normalise the country’s law and order situation as chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman called on him at Bangabhaban, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangshta reported, president’s press secretary Md Joynal Abedin told BSS after the meeting.

During the meeting, the Army chief said that 27,000 army personnel were deployed in 57 districts, including the capital city.

The army chief said that Bangladesh Army would be in the field as long as it was needed to normalise the law and order situation.
