Foreign minister Hasan Mahmud alleged on Tuesday that Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus had called upon the international community to ‘interfere in Bangladesh’s internal issue, terming his call as an ‘anti-state’ act.

Blaming the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami for deadly violence during the anti-quota student protests, he said that Professor Yunus did not condemn attacks on state properties in his statement.

‘Such a statement is unfortunate and unexpected from a respected personality like Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. His call to  international community for interfering in Bangladesh’s internal issue is an anti-state act,’ Hasan said while briefing reporters on his ministry’s initiatives against ‘rumours’ being spread at home and abroad about the country’s overall situation .

He said that the statement was condemnable.

Bangladeshi Nobel peace prize laureate Muhammad Yunus urged the international community on Monday to stop the deadly violence that wracked his country since students started protesting against civil service hiring rules, reported Agence France-Presse from Dhaka on Monday.

‘I urgently call on world leaders and the United Nations to do everything within their powers to end the violence against those who are exercising their rights to protest,’ the 83-year-old said in a statement.

‘There must be investigations into the killings that have taken place already,’ he added in his first public comments since the unrest began as reported by the AFP.
