The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association on Sunday urged the government to keep the apparel industry out of the purview of curfew.

The country’s readymade garment factories will also remain shut today in line with the government holiday considering the safety of workers and industry amid the ongoing unrest over the quota reform movement.

BGMEA president SM Mannan Kochi informed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on the day following a meeting with prime minister’s principal secretary Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah.

The apparel sector leaders will sit with the government again today (Monday) and will take decision whether the factories will be opened on Tuesday or not, he said.

‘We have also requested to restore the broadband internet connection immediately as the export business of the sector is getting hampered severely,’ Kochi said.

Apparel sector leaders in the meeting thanked the government for meeting the demands of the students and expressed satisfaction over the verdict of the Appellate Division on the quota issue, he said.

Kochi said that they also requested the government to take legal actions against those who set public and private properties on fire taking advantage of the quota reform movement.

Former BGMEA presidents Abdus Salam Murshedy and Md Siddiqur Rahman and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association executive president Mohammad Hatem, among others, were present at the meeting.

The government imposed a curfew across the country from midnight past Friday as at least 110 people were killed and several thousand others were injured till Friday in clashes across the country in quota reform protests, starting from July 16.

On Saturday, the government announced general holidays for Sunday and Monday.

Amid the unrest, the country’s many RMG factories were closed on Saturday and all RMG factories remained closed on Sunday as well.
