Education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury on Sunday said that educational institutions would be reopened in appropriate time after ensuring the security of students.

He also said that they would take measures for not allowing any harassment on the students, who were involved in the protests.


At a press briefing, the minister made the comments after the Appellate Division asked the government to recruit 93 per cent job seekers on the basis of their merits and appoint remaining 7 per cent maintaining quotas.

The press briefing was held at the law minister Anisul Huq’s Gulshan residence where state minister for information Muhammad A Arafat was also present.

Mohibul Hassan said that after reopening, the concerned authorities would work to make the educational institutions education-friendly and ensure a pro-liberation war forces amicable environment.

One of the demands of the protesters is to ensure safety of all students, involved in the protests, from all harassment when the normalcy would return in the educational institutions.

Assuring the protesters, the minister said that they would take action, including administrative initiatives, for preventing harassment of the students.

Over 140 people were killed and thousands injured, mostly in Dhaka, while staging protests, demanding reformation of quota in government jobs since July 16.

Clashes erupted between protesters and law enforcers accompanied by the ruling Awami League activists in the capital and many other places across the country.

Since July 18, a complete shutdown is being enforced across the country by Students’ Movement against Discrimination, a platform of anti-quota protesters and the government is enforcing a countrywide curfew for sine die since July 20.

The government on July 16 announced the indefinite closure of all secondary, and higher secondary level educational institutions.

University Grants Commission of Bangladesh on the same day requested all the public and private universities in the country to keep their institutions closed and vacate residential halls until further notice. National University authorities also closed down all colleges under it for sine die. 

The primary and mass education ministry announced on July 17 the closure of government primary schools in areas under the jurisdiction of city corporations across Bangladesh for an indefinite period.

The government also postponed Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations on July 18, on July 21, July 23 and July 25.
