At least 13 more people were killed as protests and violence continued for the second day of the nationwide curfew on Sunday.

The protesters came out of their homes defying the curfew in Dhaka and some other places in the country.


This happened despite the Appellate Division on Sunday scrapped the High Court verdict that on June 5 asked the government to restore quotas in public services. 

The apex court fixed 93 per cent jobs for general quota and ordered a 7 per cent quota — 5 per cent for the children of freedom fighters, 1 per cent for national minorities, and 1 per cent for people with disabilities and third genders.

Scores of people were also injured in clashes between protesters and security forces.

At least seven people were killed in Dhaka city and five in Narsingdi until filing this report at 9:30pm.

Nobi Noor, 45, who was injured in Savar during Saturday’s clash died in Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar in the morning.

The latest causalities, verified by ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondents, took the death toll from the unrest in the past six days to 155.

Two killings were reported in Gazipur and four in Mymensingh on Saturday night.

Protesters defied the curfew in Dhaka’s Jatrabari and Rampura area, prompting law enforcement agencies to open fire, witnesses said.

The government on Saturday night extended the curfew until 3:00pm and for an indefinite period after a pause of two hours.

The law enforcers fired indiscriminately at protesters as clashes began in Jatrabari at 9:00am.

Al-Amin Arif, a resident in the capital’s Jatrabari area said that police, Rapid Action Battalion and Bangladesh Army managed to clear the road from Jatrabari to signboard by 3:00pm.

RAB used helicopters to fire sound grenades, tear shells and rubber bullets in Shonirakhra, Rayerbagh and Kadamtali area to disperse the protesters. 

At least four people shot dead in Signboard and Shonirakhra areas were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The victims are Imran, 16, Akash 16, Rakib 21 and an unidentified youth aged about 16.

Abdul Latif, 40, Tofiqul Islam, 25 and Zakir Hossain, 32, who were undergoing treatment at the hospital having sustained injuries during clashes on Friday and Saturday respectively, also died on Sunday.

Clash between law enforcers and protesters also continued in the capital’s Badda and Rampura areas on Sunday but no causality from the spots could be confirmed.

Matshajibi League Shibpur thana unit president Tipu Sultan was among five  killed in clashes in Narsingdi, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent, quoting Madhobdi police station officer in-charge Kamruzzaman.

Hospital sources also confirmed the death of Md Nahid, 22, a hawker, Abdul Barik 19, an employee of a shop, pedestrian Hosen Ali, 27 and a 28 year-old unidentified youth.

All sustained bullet injuries on different parts of their bodies during a clash that broke out around 1:00pm at Baburhat under Sadar upazila.

People also ignored curfew in many other areas due to work and other purposes while some low-income group people, such as vegetable and fruit vendors risked the wrath of law enforcers to come out of their homes.

A public order issued by police headquarters on Friday said that anyone breaking the curfew could face jail upto one year or be fined as per law. 

Many people were left stranded in Dhaka as no launches or trains departed from the city’s Sadarghat Launch Terminal and Kamlapur Railway Stations on Sunday. 

A Sreemangal resident Shaheed came to Komlapur Rail Station with his family members carrying the tickets of Kalni Expres before they were turned back.

Md Shagar, a shopkeeper from New Market, came to Sadarghat Launch Terminal to go to his village in Bhola in vain.

Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of student protests was found in Purbachal area on Saturday after he went missing a day earlier. 

He alleged that he was taken blind-folded and tortured after he was picked up by some people who identified themselves as members of detective branch of Dhaka police.

Students of Jahangirnagar University held a protest rally on the campus in the afternoon, demanding a law in the parliament reforming quota system in government services, JU correspondent reported.

Addressing the rally, the protesters demanded the removal of home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and the ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader.

In Gazipur city, protesters also gathered in several places, including Shabbari-Neyamat road, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in the district reported. 

Chase and counter-chase between the protesters and law enforcers took place in the city.

Members of the law enforcement agencies brought the situation under control firing sound grenades, rubber bullets and tear shells.
