The committees of 27 units of the ruling Awami League under the Dhaka-13 constituency were dissolved on Thursday night due to their inaction during the anti-quota student protest in Mohammadpur and Basila areas in the capital.
Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League president Sheikh Bazlur Rahman told reporters that the decision was taken at a meeting held at Shuchana Community Centre at Mohammadpur in the presence of AL presidium member and local lawmaker Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
During the quota reform movement, there had been violence for several days in different areas of the Dhaka-13 constituency.
Even after being instructed by the Awami League to stay in the field, the local leaders and activists were seen to be inactive.
As a result, there were accusations of failure to deal with the movement against the leaders within the party.
Bazlur Rahman said that 27 unit committees under eight wards under the Dhaka-13 constituency had been dissolved due to inactivity of local AL leaders and activists in dealing with recent agitations.
At least 209 people were killed in the week-long clashes between agitating students and law enforcement agencies along with the ruling party people.
