Two more critically injured people died on Friday while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, taking the death toll from the recent violence during student protests to at least 211 across the country.

The two victims, Imtiaz Ahmed Zabir, 23, and Main Uddin, 25, were admitted to the DMCH after they were hit by bullets in violence during the countrywide student movement for quota reform in government jobs.

Zabir’s father, Nowsher, who did not give his second name, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that his son was a bachelor of business administration student at Southeast University.

He breathed his last at about 4:00am in the intensive care unit of the DMCH.

Earlier in the day, another injured victim, Main Uddin, 25, a madrassah student from Demra, died at the ICU of the hospital’s burn unit around 2:00am.

With them, DMCH handed over the bodies at least 87 people, who were either brought dead or died from injuries at the hospital during the clashes between students and law enforcement agencies.

Many hospitals either declined to provide information or were unreachable regarding the number of injuries and deaths during the protests.

No government agencies have yet to provide any official data on casualties following the clashes between July 16 and 22.

Nowsher said that two bullets hit his son Zabir on his right thigh and testicles in the Rampura area on July 19. He was taken to Mugda Medical College and Hospital on the day and later taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.

As his health condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the DMCH on July 22.

‘Zabir had a dream of taking higher education abroad. But he is no more,’ lamented Nowsher, who is a resident of Jashore.

Kamrul Islam, the father of another deceased Main, said that his son received bullet injuries on the neck and back in the Rayerbagh area on July 21.

A DMCH official said that more than 1,600 injured people related to quota reform movement violence received treatment at the hospital.

Among them, over 100 critically injured people are still undergoing treatment at the hospital’s different units, including the ICU and HDU, said the official.
